Helpful Hints From the NH Dept. of Environmental Services

From - Answers to common Lake Questions - January 1989

1) Keep land clearing to a minimum, roads and paths leading to the lake should be curved to reduce erosion.

2) Do not bath, shampoo or wash boats, pets or vehicles in or near lakes where detergent can run into water.

3) Septic Systems:
Check your leach field for soft or wet areas or septic smells.
Pump out you tank every 2-5 years, or when tank sludge exceeds 1/3 capacity
Do not flush bulky waste or grease, they can clog your system
Conserve water
Do not flush toxic wastes, i.e. Paint thinner, chlorine, etc.
Do not build over or cement over your tank, the weight can compact soil or break pipes
Do not use colored toilet paper, it does not break down as quickly as white paper
Direct rain gutters and surface drainages away from leach field
Drain cleaners, chlorine and other caustic substances can kill the natural bacteria in your tank and impair its function

We hope these hints can be of help to all. Any questions can be referred to the Biology Bureau, 603-271-3503.

NOTE: All lake information can be obtained by the above Bureau.
